Geographical Characteristics
In the east of Aden is a coast depression which continues with mountains with heights over 2.000 m and with a plateau into the interior of the country. In the north of Aden is Tihamah coast plain and into the interior of the country the Jabal Shu'aib mountains have 3.760 m. There are some rivers which have their springs in those mountains but disappear in the Rub al Khali Desert.

Climate
The coast depressions are hot and arid. Into the interior the mountains are colder and moister, especially where the rainfall is 100cm per year between March and September. The summer temperatures are over 50ēC in the center of the country. In Aden the medium temperature is 25ēC in January and 35ēC in July, the amount of rainfall is 2.3 cm per year. The numbers for Sanaa are 14ēC, 21ēC and 50 cm per year.

Mining and Industry
The salt is extracted in the north-east of the country and near As Salif on the west coast. They have deposits of coal, gold, silver, iron and uranium. The petroleum is extracted near the ex border between ex-states Yemen. There are industries of fish, naval constructions and textiles near Aden. Sanaa has textile factories. The fish processing take place in Al Hudaydah. Aden is the main industrial city and a center for the road traffic.

Agriculture
50% of the population works in agriculture. They cultivate high-quality cotton, coffee and tobacco. The millet and sesame are the main cultivated plants. The tobacco is cultivated for the export and the cereals, fruits and vegetables for food. They grow sheep, goats and cows. The most important ports are Aden and Al Mukalla.
