Geographical Characteristics
The country is situated in the east of Asia and has two maritime facades: Japan Sea in east and Yellow Sea in west. The relief is various, predominant high (3/4 of the country's surface is at altitudes above 500 m). The mountains are situated in north on the border with China and their maximum altitude is 2.750 m and in east, the Diamond Mountains, with maximum altitudes of 1.638 m. between them there are plateaus with altitudes over 1.000 m: Kaema and Musan Plateaus. The plains are along the coast re gions and are prolonged in the Basin of Taedong River.

Climate
The climate is influenced by the relief configuration and the action of monsoons. The winters are cold and the summers have abundant rainfalls. The forests have characteristic essences as Korean cedar, Korean maple, red pine, Aian spruce fir. They occupy over 2/3 of the territory and the faun includes Ussuri tigers, brown bears and leopards.

Population and Cities
The capital of the country is P'yŏngyang and has 2.639.000 inhabitants. The country has 22.195.000 inhabitants. The birth rate is 23.5% and the death rate is 5.4%. 67% of the population lives in cities. The most important cities are: Chongjin (720.000 inhabitants), Hamhung (670.000 inhabitants), Kaesong (330.000 inhabitants), Wonsan (240.000 inhabitants) and Sinuiju (200.000 inhabitants). 99% of the people are Koreans and 1% is Chinese. The two coast regions and the plain in south-west are well populated with a density of population of 200 inhabitants/kmē. Densities under the national average are in the higher zones in south-east and in northern mountains where the density is 90 inhabitants/kmē and 40 inhabitants/kmē. The most important religions are: Buddhism, Confucianism and Shamanism.

State
The country is a presidential republic according to the Constitution in 1992. The legislative activity is exerted by the Popular Supreme Assembly and the executive by the Central Popular Committee and the administrative Council. Some of the political parties are: Work Party from Korea, Social Democrat Party, Young Friends Party and the Democratic Front for Reunification of Country.

Economy
With the exception of hydrocarbons the subsoil resources are various: pit coal, graphite, magnesium, iron ore, rare metals and phosphates. The energetic and forestry potentials are important (10.000 MW). The industry is developed and has a various structure: steel, car, chemical products, textiles, food and clothes. The agriculture is modern and 40% of the people are working in it. People are specialized in cultures of: rice, corn, soy, cotton, tobacco, vegetables, fruits and millet. Growing animals isn't important, but fishing is active: over 1.5 million tones annually.
