Geographical Characteristics
Malaysia includes Western Malaysia or the half-isle Malaysia (131.598 km²) and Eastern Malaysia which contains Sarawak (124.449 km²) and Sabah (73.710 km²) on Borneo Island. In the center of the half-isle there are some mountains and near them there are depressions. The eastern depression is narrow and inaccessible but the western is larger a
nd more developed. The highest peak in Western Malaysia is Gunong Tahan (2.189 m) but in the eastern country there are some higher peaks, the highest being Gunong Kinabalu (4.101 m). Most of the Srawak and Sabah's surfaces are covered with forests, mountains and is not populated.
Climate
The climate is warm and wet without a cold season. The south-west wind brings rain in many regions between April and September and the north-east wind between November and March. The temperature are constant even the nights are warm. In Cameron Mountains the medium temperature is 18°C every month. Kuala Lumpur has a medium temperature of 27°C and a rainfall of 120 cm per year.
Agriculture
Malaysia has a productive agriculture especially in the western depressions where they cultivate rubber, the country is the biggest producer in the world, and palm tree oil which is more profitable. The new schemes for irrigations increased the production in north-west and in the center of the country too. The tropical forests cover 60% of the surface of the country and are an important source of incomes.
Industry
The old industries are mining, lumber and processing of palm tree oil, copra and rubber. In Sabah and Sarawak industry of processing petroleum and the agriculture products are very important.
Cities and Population
Only 38% of the people live in cities but there are a lot of important cities along the coast depressions: Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh (293.849 inhabitants), Georgetown (248.241 inhabitants) and Jonore Baharu (246.395 inhabitants). Kuala Lumpur is the main industrial city and is served by Kelang port. Ipoh developed initially because of the stanium industry and Jonore Baharu is in an important agricultural region and is on the way to Singapore.
