Geographical Characteristics :

The country is situated in north-west of South America. It is crossed by Equator, has access at the Pacific Ocean, the coast is 887 km long, and has a coast plain covered with savanna and agrarian cultures. The Andes Mountains have altitudes above 6.000 m, Chimborazo Peak has 6.310 m, are formed of two chains which have many volcanoe s (9 of them are still active) and are separated by plateaus and small depressions of altitude well populated. The level of seismicity is high. To the east the Andes dominate Oriente Plain (over 50% of the territory) which is drained by Amazon's tributary and covered with equatorial forests. The national park in Colon Archipelago was classified in 1979 patrimony of humanity.

Population and Cities :

The capital of the country is Quito and has 1.101.000 inhabitants. The country has 10.851.000 inhabitants. The birth rate is 32.9‰ and the death rate is 7.4‰. 57% of the population lives in cities. The most important cities are: Guayaquil (1.508.000 inhabitants), Cuenca (195.000 inhabitants), Machala (144.000 inhabitants) and Portoviejo (132.000 inhabitants). 35% of the people are Metis, 25% are white, 20% are Amerindians, 15% are Mulattos and 5% are Negro. The population is concentrated in the plateaus and depressions in Andes and in the coast regions. The most important religions are: Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism. Ecuador's culture is defined by Ecuador's mestizo majority which is a mixture of European and Amerindian influences together with African elements inherited from slave ancestors. Ecuador's indigenous communities are integrated into that culture to varying degrees.

State :

The country is a presidential republic, a federal state, according to the Constitution in 1979. The legislative activity is exerted by the President and National Congress and the executive by a cabinet leaded and chosen by the President. The political parties are 29 and some of them are: Christian Social Party, Democrat Left, Ecuadorian Roldosist Party, Radical Liberal Party, Popular Democracy, Conservatory Party and Concentration of Popular Forces.

Economy :

The country is in course of developing. The hydrocarbons resources assure over of the exports. The processing industries are relative various and are concentrated in Guayaquil and Quito. The agriculture is based on cultivating: bananas, coffee, cocoa, sugar cane. People grow animals and fish. They produce 650.000 tones of fish annually. The cereal production isn't enough and they have to import.
