Geographical Characteristics:
The 1.600 km of Atlantic's coast are surrounded of depressions. The interior of the country is mostly formed of plateaus, Planalto Central, with a medium height of 1.000-1.400 m. the longest river in Angola is Cuanza, has 960 km and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Cabinda is an enclave, separated from the rest of the country by Zaire. Most of the country has the same cli
mate: only one season, moist between October and March and arid in rest. The rains are between 100 and 150 cm per year. The temperatures low in the plateau, and Huambo, at 1.700 m has a medium temperature of 20 Celsius degrees in January and 16 Celsius degrees in July. The coast depressions are affected by the cold current Benguela, and in the south of Luanda there are conditions of desert. The medium temperature in Luanda is 25 Celsius degrees in January and 21 Celsius degrees in July, with rainfall of 30 cm.
Industry and Mining:
Almost 15% of the people work in the industry, based on mining, cement, constructions, fishes' preparation, food, textile products, production of beer and tobacco. Luanda, Lobito and Benguela are important industrial centers, but Lubango and Malange, in the interior of the country, are developing quickly. The hydro-electric stations on the Cuanza, Catumbela and Cunene rivers produce 67% of the electric energy. The petroleum is the main source which brings money to the country and along with diamonds they bring 90% of the exports. There are produced annually approximately 22 millions of tones of petroleum. The diamonds are extracted from the north-east of the country. Angola also has salt, gold, uranium, bauxite and iron ore deposits.
Agriculture:
70% of the population works in the agriculture and under 30% of the surface is cultivated, especially for sustenance. 23% of Angola's surface is grassland. People cultivate manioc, sweet potatoes, corn, millet and beam, but because of the war the productions were affected and the import was necessary. There are also cultivated palms, bananas, sisal, coffee, cotton, tobacco and sugar cane. The forests occupy over 40% of Angola's surface and there is exported hard essence wood and paper wood. Angola exports fresh and prepared fish, and fish oil.
