Adirondack MountainsThe Adirondack mountains are situated in North East upstate New York. Its highest point is Mount Marcy, which is 1629 m above sea level. Mount Marcy was named after a former governor by the name of William L Marcy who authorized the environmental study of the region. It has also been referred to as Tahawus, an Indian term meaning cloud splitter. This range of mountains are often included by geographers in the Appalachian, however they are more similar to the Laurentian Mountains in Canada. This region falls within a 25000 km2 national park including a protected forest area. Through its early history, the Adirondack Mountains were natural borderlands or boundaries between the native Indians, between Europeans, and finally between Britain and the United States.

The mountain region was nam e by Ebenezer Emmons in 1838, where a common nickname for the area is Dacks or Dax. The region has many cabins, hunting lodges and villas due to the popular tourist attractions in the region, especially the wild scenery and rocky, irregular shores of the surrounding lakes. These lakes include Lake Placid, Lake George, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake and St Regis Lake.

The area used to be key to the lumbering industry which was ceased upon entry into restricted area once the State Park was established in 1892, the existing forests include spruce, pine and broad leaf trees. As a tourist attraction hunting and fishing is allowed in the park, within stipulated rules and regulations, ensuring a well stocked rivers and lakes – predominantly with trout and black bass. There is also a large population of bird species not found in most areas.

This area is home to the Adirondack Museum which reflects life and development over the years of northern New York State. The Museum shares the stories of the Adirondacks.

With the natural history museum highlighting prehistoric times of when the mastodons roamed the valleys, and the surrounding regions were completely wild with no towns or cities in. Although the State Park is protected there are currently 130,000 residents of 102 towns and villages that live within the park's boundaries.
